How would you describe the courses?
Twisted Turkey is a series of trail runs. Trails are packed soil – sometimes muddy, rocky, or crossed by tree roots. There are several wooden footbridges across creeks. Full course descriptions and maps are available here.
The 5k (3.1 mile) course is perfect for those who have never run a race or a trail run before. If you’ve run a 5k on pavement, we encourage you to do a little “off-road” practice before race day. This is a walk/run – set your pace to your best ability. The 5k includes 3 minor hills.
The 10k (6.2 mile) course is our moderate option (not an easy course, but not the biggest challenge we have to offer). The 10k includes 2 major hills.
The 10k Powerwalk is an excellent choice if you want the challenge of distance and hills, but are not excited about the idea of running the course.
The 15k (9.3 mile) course is the big challenge. This should NOT be your first trail run. The 15k includes 3 major hills. 15k racers need to maintain a 13 minute/mile race pace or faster. If runners are not at the finish line split (mile 6.2) by 11:20am, then runners may be directed into the finish line to receive a 10k time.
Can I practice the course before race day?
Yes! Strawberry Hill’s trails are open daily, dawn to dusk. The course routes are described and mapped here. Permanent 5k mile markers are posted in neon green numbers on wood signs; permanent 10k mile markers are posted in neon orange. The 15k follows the 10k route and then finishes in Michaux State Forest; there are no permanent Twisted Turkey mile markers in Michaux.
Race courses will be increasingly marked throughout October, with final marking and flagging taking place during the week of the race. The course is also blown of all leaves and debris in the final days leading up to the race (sometime earlier as well, but this is weather dependent…leaves fall fast!)
What are the registration fees?
$40 online registration fee per runner.
$35 EARLY BIRD SPECIAL available through 9/30.
Online registration closes 11/9. Day-of registration $45.
Can I register on the day of the event?
Yes, however, we would prefer to have you registered earlier so we can be sure to have plentiful food, drink and extras for all of our runners/walkers. Registration closes at 9am on the day of the event. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted. You will need to fill out a waiver during registration, and any participants under 18 will need a guardian present to sign the waiver.
What does race registration include?
2017 swag will be announced soon!
Age category and overall winners take home Cornish game hens or frozen turkeys (Thanksgiving dinner prep has never been so fun!).
How do I get to the event?
View a map here.
What time should I arrive?
Check-in and walk-up registration open at 7:30am on race day. Plan to arrive as early as possible to get the best parking. If you arrive after 9:00am, you’ll be rushing to park, check-in, and get ready to race.
Where do I park?
We strongly encourage carpooling!
There are two parking areas for the race – the earlier you arrive, the better your parking. Early birds will park in our main lot, adjacent to check-in and the start line. After that lot fills, later arrivals will be directed to secondary parking – this is about 1/4 mile from check-in and the start line, and takes some time to walk downhill. Please plan to arrive early and give yourself plenty of time to check-in and warm up once you are here. If you are running very late, you can be dropped off at the check-in area and your spectators can park without you.
Where do I check-in & get my race bib?
The morning of the race, you can begin checking in and picking up your bib at 7:30am at Strawberry Hill’s Nature Center (green building).
We want to make your race morning as simple as possible, so this year we are offering the opportunity to pick up your bib the day before the race. You can pick up your race packet and bib number at Gettysburg College on Friday only if you registered BEFORE 12pm NOON on WEDNESDAY 11/8. If you plan to pick up your race packet at Gettysburg College, you will need to visit the Office of Experiential Education located in the basement level of Plank Gym (noted building 18 on the map). The office will be open from 8:30am-6:00pm on Friday.
When does the race start?
10k Powerwalk starts at 9:00am. Pre-walk briefing at the Pink Log Cabin at 8:40am.
5k, 10k, and 15k start at 10:00am (plan to be at the start line by 9:50). Pre-run briefing at the Pink Log Cabin at 9:35am.
The full timeline for the day is listed here.
What should I bring with me on race day?
We recommend that you wear layers and comfortable running shoes. Bring anything you need for your pre-race routine. If you are over 21 and intend to enjoy beer from Appalachian Brewing Company, you MUST bring your ID. If you pick up your bib at Gettysburg College the night before, remember to bring your bib with you on race day!
Where can I stash my stuff during the race?
We have a free bag drop available at the registration building, but we encourage you to leave anything you don’t need for the race or celebration at home or in your vehicle.
What restroom facilities are available at Strawberry Hill?
There is a restroom facility in the main campus area of the Preserve. While you’re out on the run? Just choose a tree away from the trails and creeks… please remember to Leave No Trace.
Are refreshments available?
Yes! We want to make sure our runners are fueled before and after the Twisted Turkey. Pre-race, we offer a spread of quick snacks. Water stations are positioned throughout the race courses. We take things up a notch when you finish the race, with turkey dogs (and a few veggie dogs) and beer [21+ only] (these refreshments are for runners only).
For spectators, food will be available to purchase from food trucks.
During the race, water stations are positioned throughout the courses:
For 10k/15k—water is provided at 1.3 miles; 4.2 miles & 5.5 miles (which is the same station), and the finish line.
For 5k—water is provided at 2.2 & 2.6 miles (which is the same station), and the finish line.
Can my family/friends come?
We hope they do! While you are out running, our spectators keep the party going with music and picnic games. food will be available to purchase from food trucks. Spectators hang out at the start/finish line, and will also be able to see 15k runners as they pass through at about their sixth mile.
What kind of entertainment is there for spectators?
Besides watching the runners & walkers come around the home stretch to the finish line, spectators can play picnic games, enjoy food trucks, and listen to our live musical entertainment.
Can I switch races after I register?
If you plan to change from one race to the other, please notify us by noon on Thursday (11/9) so we can adjust your bib number and notify PA Runners to recode your chip.
When will race results be posted?
PA Runners helps us post a printed results list in real time during the post-race celebration. Results will be available on the PA Runners website shortly after the race. Check the Past Races page for a link to results. Event photos will be posted the week after the race, with a link also on Past Races.
Can I win anything?
Each runner and walker, regardless of placement, receives a ticket for our post-race raffle.
There are placement prizes for the 5k, 10k, and 15k (not the 10K Powerwalk). Top Male & Female in each age category take home a frozen Cornish game hen and Top Overall Male & Female for each race take home frozen turkeys (Thanksgiving dinner prep has never been so fun!).
Can my dog run with me?
Sorry, turkeys & humans only. We politely ask that everyone to refrain from running with a dog, cat, mouse, turtle, etc.
I am unable to participate in the race. Can I volunteer?
Absolutely! We need lots of help in the days leading up to the race and on the day of the event. Please call (717) 642-5840 and let us know you’d like to help out!
