Internships 

Gain professional experience with a 609-acre non-profit preserve and environmental education center.

All interns will also complete an independent project that may require gathering and analyzing data, preparing reports, facility design, marketing, and the creation of a departmental procedures manual. Projects are mutually agreed upon and aligned with academic studies.

Adult and Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification required prior to May 20 (a course will be available at Strawberry Hill in May). Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a license required. A criminal background check is required for all staff working with youth.

9 MONTH INTERNSHIP, Feb. – Oct.        
Focus: Environmental Education and Nonprofit Management (Teaching/Administration)
Hours: 40 hrs/wk, flexible work schedule (February – October), Some evening/weekends required.
Compensation: This internship provides a $450 bi-weekly stipend and housing option. Paid Training: Wilderness First Aid Certification.

SPRING SEMESTER INTERNSHIP, Feb. – May (must commit through May 31.)
Focus: Environmental Education (Teaching)
Hours: Part-time (avg 20hrs/week) and full-time (avg 40 hrs/week) options available with a flexible work schedule (February – May), Some evening/weekends required.
Compensation: This internship is a for credit internship. A housing option is provided.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP, May – August
Focus: Environmental Education and Outdoor Recreation (Program Delivery/Teaching)
Hours: 40 hrs. per week  (May – August)
Compensation: $1,500 stipend and housing option provided for the summer. Paid Training: Wilderness First Aid Certification.

Part-time Naturalist  (posted 9/10/16, ongoing)

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve in Fairfield, PA is seeking applicants for naturalist positions (part time, unscheduled).  Applicants should have experience working with children and/or adults in group learning settings and working knowledge of local conservation topics.  A background in environmental education or experiential education is preferred.

Hours for this position are flexible; Naturalists conduct 1.5 – 2 hour programs on an as-needed basis – programs are scheduled as requested by visiting groups. Most programs take place during school hours, with some evenings and weekends. February – May is the busiest season for programs. Naturalists benefit from a variety of free and reduced-cost learning experiences.

Adult and Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification required (must be certified before delivering programs). Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a license required. A criminal background check is required for all staff working with youth.

Interviews are typically conducted in fall and winter, to begin training in the following January.

Adventure Camp Counselors

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve is seeking motivated and enthusiastic staff members for the 2015  Adventure Camp!

“Strawberry Hill and the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County are pleased to present ADVENTURE CAMP! “Adventurers” will explore more than 600 acres of forests and creeks at Strawberry Hill through science-based programs, enjoy 2 afternoon free-swim sessions (swim lessons not included) and other alternate activities at YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County, and take a Field Trip Day! Strawberry Hill’s fun environmental education programs meet state and federal academic standards for science and ecology, bridging an important summer learning gap. Adventure Camp is endorsed by Gettysburg Area School District and Fairfield Area School District.”

Lead Counselor 

Age 18+

Lead Counselors will be responsible for the daily implementation of the summer camp program, including: ensuring the well-being and safety of all participants, aiding in planning of camp activities and events, facilitating and participating in all activities, following all camp and preserve procedures, providing daily feedback to the programs and events manager, filling out paperwork and daily logs, and maintaining a fun and safe environment for all participants. Applicants should have experience working with children ages 4-12, particularly in a camp environment.

This position is an average of 30-40 hours per week, June-August 2015. Lead Counselors must be available for all eight weeks of Adventure Camp (June 15 – August 7), and for camp staff training May 30 – June 5.

Adult and Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification required prior to May 30. Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a license required. A criminal background check is required for all staff working with youth.

Volunteer Counselor-in-Training 

Grade 8 +

The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is designed to give students in eighth grade and above an opportunity to develop skills and experience that will assist them in future employment opportunities. This volunteer program introduces students to program planning and facilitation, customer service experiences, activity supervision, and much more in a fun outdoor environment. Most CITs volunteer for either multiple full weeks or a few consistent days every week. CITs are required to attend staff training June 6-10.

CIT applicants are not required to submit a regular employment application. Instead, please complete the CIT Volunteer Application Form and submit along with a recommendation letter from a teacher. Volunteer applications due by April 30.
